Why Nepali Travelers Prefer Mostly Thailand and Dubai

International travel has been on the rise among Nepali travelers in recent years. Due to more access to information, the availability of inexpensive options for air travel and increasing income levels, traveling abroad is not restricted to a small circle of people. These days, many Nepalis are holidaying abroad. But there is a clear trend—most of the travelers are heading to Thailand, Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia.

According to cliche, approximately 70–75% of Nepali tourists go to these countries. Travel bucket list may include places like Euro, USA, Japan, South Korea and Canada but a lot of Nepali travelers still prefer these Asian destinations as their first pick. The question is—why?

Now, let us look at the top reasons of this trend.

1. Visa Challenges

One of the biggest barriers for Nepali travelers is the visa process. Many people in Nepal can afford to travel to developed countries like Europe, Japan, or South Korea. However, obtaining a visa for these places is often difficult, time-consuming, and uncertain. Countries in Europe and North America have strict visa policies. Applicants must submit strong financial documents, travel history, and proof of return. Even after meeting all the requirements, there is no guarantee of approval. In contrast, places like Thailand, Malaysia, and Dubai have much simpler visa processes. Some offer visa-on-arrival or easy online applications. This convenience makes them very appealing to travelers looking for a hassle-free experience.

I know, many of my friends applied for tourist visas to Korea and Japan, but around 75% of them were rejected, even though they had sponsorship from big organizers.

2. Budget-Friendly Travel

Another major consideration is cost. Travelling to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Vietnam is far less expensive than travelling to Europe or America.

With Southeast Asia, Nepali Travelers have multiple options to choose from when travelling on a limited budget. Cheap flights, hotels, food, and transportation make it easy to explore the region economically.

In contrast, a trip to Europe, the USA, or Canada is up to three times more expensive. The cost of visas, plane tickets, hotels, and daily expenses make it prohibitively expensive.

In the modern world, people want to travel more and to invest in less expensive trips rather than spending a lot of money in a single trip. This budget preference is perfectly suited to Southeast Asia.

3. Entertainment and Lifestyle Experience

Tourism is often viewed by travelers as an opportunity to be entertained and relax while on vacation. A group of countries that have a well-known global reputation for providing entertainment to travelers through hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions are Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Thailand has very busy cities, beautiful islands and a variety of entertainment options. Whether you are looking for a fun time at a beach party or a delightful cultural show, you can find it in Thailand. Dubai is also highly regarded by travelers for its expensive lifestyle, shopping and exciting tourist attractions.

Many well-developed countries such as Japan, Korea and most of Europe may offer rich cultural experiences and historical sites, but can be seen as being more pedantic and lacking opportunities to be entertained.

If you are looking for fun, excitement and an escape from the daily grind you are likely to find these things in a much more enjoyable fashion while traveling around Southeast Asia.

We have heard that in Thailand, girls are available at cheap prices, and that good massages are also inexpensive. It is said that people can enjoy nightlife all night in discos and pubs. On social media, there are also claims that in Cambodia, very young girls are easily found. With this kind of mindset, the number of people traveling to these countries is increasing day by day.

Anyway, in my experience, these things are true because I have personally traveled to many countries.

4. Short Travel Time

Another important reason is accessibility. Flights from Nepal to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai are shorter and more frequent. Travelers can reach these destinations within a few hours, no transit, making them ideal for short vacations.

Traveling to Europe, America, and Canada can take 2–3 days because of long flights and transit times. Since the return journey takes just as long, one of the participants said it wouldn’t be practical for a short trip.

5. Culturally Similar

Several of Southeast Asia’s countries are culturally similar to Nepal, as they share similar foods/climates/lifestyles to help Nepali travelers adapt and fit in easily.

For instance, in Thailand or Malaysia the food is more similar to Asian foods versus how you would normally eat in Western countries which might require an adjustment. The language barriers in tourist areas are usually less challenging too.

While traveling in Dubai, you often meet many Indians, Pakistanis, and Nepalis. In shops, restaurants, and hotels, most of the staff are from these countries, so it doesn’t really feel like being in a distant foreign land. There is no language problem, and food is also easily available. That is why the United Arab Emirates is also a very popular choice for Nepali travelers.

Conclusion

There are an endless number of places to travel all over the world. However, some of the biggest factors influencing the destination choice are practical. For the Nepali traveler, Thailand, Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia all provide a fantastic combination of price, access and fun.

Visa convenience, low prices, and quality of entertainment are all factors that make the top international destinations for Nepalis. While the dream destinations of most Nepalis will continue to be in Europe, United States, Japan, Korea, and Canada; these locations are typically far less accessible due to higher prices and stricter visa regulations than in the previously mentioned countries.

Travel patterns will continue to change and evolve over time; however, one thing remains the same, Nepali travelers are increasingly becoming more globally aware but making practical and smart choices regarding travel destinations. To date, the preferred travel destinations for the Nepali travler remain Southeast Asia and the nearby regions.

Although we have mentioned many countries within and around Asia, China has not been included. While China is a place that many visitors do travel, most Nepali travelers are there for business purposes rather than travel purposes. Additionally, travelling by yourself in China can be exceedingly difficult due to a lack of English speaking ability, and I can personally attest to that after traveling there.
