Today is Maha Shivaratri Mela in Nepal

Today the people of Nepal are taking part in the festival of Maha Shivaratri. This is an important day in the Hindu calendar. The festival is held on a night in the month of Falgun. On this night people think about Lord Shiva. He is a god who helps people change and be kind to each other.

From the mountains to the flat areas people go to temples and homes to remember Lord Shiva. They do this by not eating food saying prayers thinking deeply and staying awake all night.

The name Maha Shivaratri means the Great Night of Lord Shiva. This festival is different from festivals. It is not loud. It is not about eating a lot of food. Instead it is an thoughtful time. People believe that on this night Lord Shiva showed himself to everyone. If people worship him at midnight they will have peace in their lives. Be free when they die. For people this night is, about being aware and living in harmony. It is a time when people think deeply about their lives and try to be better.

Rituals Rooted in Faith and Nature

From early in the morning people who believe in Shiva start their day by bathing in rivers, ponds and water reservoirs before they go to the Shiva temples. During the day these people do not eat anything. Some people just eat fruits. Drink water and some people do not eat or drink anything at all. At the temples people give the Shiva Lingam things like milk, water, bel leaves, flowers and incense and each of these things means something like being pure being devoted and giving up things for Shiva.

One thing that is special about Maha Shivaratri in Nepal is that people light fires or dhuni in the yards of their homes at crossroads and at the temples. People think that, on this night Lord Shiva is cold so they light fires to keep him warm and to show respect. People sit around these fires sing songs called bhajans say special words called mantras and share food that was made using the fire. When people do this it feels like everyone is together and believes in the thing and it does not matter who they are or where they come from.

Staying awake all night is also something that people do on Maha Shivaratri. The night is divided into four parts. Each part has special prayers and rituals. People think that if they stay awake all night and think about Shiva they will be people and understand things better. In todays world, where everything moves fast taking a whole night to think about things is really special and means a lot to people who believe in Maha Shivaratri and Shiva.

The Heart of the Celebration: Pashupatinath

While Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in Shiva temples over Nepal, the main spiritual center of the festival is Pashupatinath Temple. Pashupatinath Temple is known as one of the holiest Shiva temples in the world. On Maha Shivaratri, Pashupatinath Temple is filled with devotion. Many pilgrims, including those from India come to Pashupatinath Temple to pray and seek blessings.

The temple grounds are filled with the sound of bells and conch shells. People chant hymns. Sadhus or holy men, from Nepal and India gather at Pashupatinath Temple. They have ash on their bodies. Long messy hair. This shows they have given up things to focus on spirituality. There are also performances and ceremonies where people light lamps. Many oil lamps are offered, which adds to the beauty of the night.

The authorities make many arrangements to handle the crowd. They set up entry lines and coordinate with security. They also provide services. With so many people everyone is respectful and orderly. This shows how much devotees respect Maha Shivaratri.

A Festival of Meaning for Modern Times

Maha Shivaratri has a deep meaning. Lord Shiva is a god who destroys things and also creates things. This shows us that when something ends something new can start.

In Nepal, where a lot of people’re farmers Maha Shivaratri is connected to nature. When winter is over and spring is coming Maha Shivaratri is a time when things start to grow. This is like the way life works. Things die and then new things are born.

For people Maha Shivaratri is not just about following old customs. Maha Shivaratri can help us see things in a way. During Maha Shivaratri people fast to learn self-control they meditate to be mindful. They worship together to feel compassion for others. In a world where there are distractions taking one night to be quiet and think can be really good, for us.

A Living Heritage

Maha Shivaratri is more than a religious event it is something that people in Nepal really care about and it is a big part of their culture. It is a time when peoples beliefs, ideas, music and the community all come together in a special way. People can celebrate Maha Shivaratri in ways like going to the temple sitting quietly at home or just feeling the special atmosphere of the night.. No matter how people celebrate Maha Shivaratri the main idea is the same: to look inside themselves and find a sense of balance, clarity and peace.

When the lamps are lit through the night and people are chanting until early in the morning Nepal is showing respect to Lord Shiva. People in Nepal think of Lord Shiva not as a god but as a reminder that we should try to live in harmony with ourselves with each other and, with the natural world. Maha Shivaratri is a time for people to remember this and to try to find this harmony in their lives.
